Stop Silverfish From Ruining Books And Clothing

By Lance Esondi

Insects and pests like silverfish have caused problems to books, papers, and clothing for a very long time. What is most interesting is that year after year silverfish and other pests damage these items, but for the most part, we still store them the exact same way. What if changing the way we stored these items could prevent the problems from happening in the first place?

Silverfish like eating your books specifically because they are attracted to starches. Wall paper glue also has this type of starch just like book bindings. These lure silverfish to them and they will eat and destroy. They also will eat your clothing, house plants, and your personal food. The things stored in cupboards and closets are up for grabs.

To protect your books and clothing, think about storing them differently. Most people put books in cardboard boxes and hang clothes in a closet tucked away in a corner of the house. The problem is that silverfish have more than enough space to get into any cardboard box, and the clothing is exposed.

The solution is to start storing these items in sealed containers. Find containers with an actual lid that seals and put away your old books and seasonal clothing in these. This will also prevent other insect pests problems like closet moths from getting to them which just gives everything more protection. If stored in the attic, it will protect these items substantially more than cardboard.

If you still have silverfish problems in your office desk or bookshelf, consider getting some sticky traps to catch them or to sprinkle a little food grade diatomaceous earth around the areas of the house there are silverfish problems. This is one of the more effective methods of dealing with these pests. - 30446
