Bed Bugs - Where They Come From and How to Get Rid of Them

By William Cook

Bed bugs are a source of vexation that most homes can do without. These pests are notorious bloodsuckers and have a preference for warm blooded animals like cats, dogs and humans, with humans being their first preference. Furthermore, eradicating them is not easy at all and it requires a serious pest control drive to remove them.

Travellers often bring bed bugs with them to a new place where they multiply rapidly and begin annoying the residents of the home. Crevices in room furniture and carpets are the common places for bed bugs to take sanctuary in and flourish.

A common myth about bed bugs is that they spread because of lack of cleanliness, but nothing can be farther from the truth. It must be remembered that blood and not trash is what attracts these bugs and hence keeping the house spotlessly clean does little to fight bed bugs. On the other hand, if the surroundings are kept clean, then the pests can be easily spotted.

Another misconception about bed bugs is that they are too tiny to be seen without external visual aid. Actually these creatures are very much visible without any help but it is hard to see them because their flat bodies permit them to slide into tiny crevices and layers of cloth with effortless ease.

They will usually bite once a week or so, and they can really survive for a long time without eating - commonly six months, but sometimes over a year.

When it comes to disinfecting a home of bed bugs, no one can do the job better than a professional pest controller, so it is better to hire such a person instead of trying to rid these pests all by yourself. Of course some home solutions do fight bed bugs, like washing bed sheets, carpets and other infested items of clothing in warm water and afterwards exposing them to strong sunshine. Gaps in the walls should be filled with a sealant, and any furniture item that has holes must be got rid of as they can turn into potential habitats for these pests. - 30446
