The Best Ways To Kill Pests Organically

By David Darby

One of the biggest concerns and issues of our generation is our health, our environment and the effects the products we use directly have on them. It is a good concern to have because some of the things we use do affect our health. Things like chemicals in products have been known to harm us. Well one area where people are definitely looking to be more organic with is pest control. With the use of chemicals to get rid of pests people want more natural ways to get rid of pests.

First of all, using natural methods, there are ways to get rid of pests. Running a San Diego pest control company has allowed me to see that more and more manufacturers are producing them. Of course the bulk of ways to get rid of pests is with chemicals. Although it is one of the main ways to totally eliminate pests, more and more pest control companies are utilizing organic methods now.

Now, one of the biggest pest problems around are ants. So naturally there are a few ways to get rid of them or eliminate organically.

Now to kill them at their ant hill is basically the key to getting rid of ants. Because just killing the ones you find in your house is not enough. Absolutely, they will keep coming back. So in my San Diego ant control service the main organic way we use to kill them at the ant hill is using organic sprays.

There are definitely ways as well for dealing with rodents organically. Because people have liked to use and utilize poisons and things like that in the past generations. But those had chemicals in them since those were not organic. With the use of traps, it is the best way to kill rodents naturally. This has been the best way to control rodents with most rodent control service.

So even though pest control has been used with chemicals in the past as you can see for yourself. There are now many effective ways to get rid of them organically. - 30446

How To Deal With Common Pest Control Problems

By David Darby

There are definitely many common things that most of the homeowners have among each other. Some of those things in common are nice and are great. While others are problems that most homeowners would rather not have to face. One of those problems that homeowners seem to share are problems with pests. Well, in this article we are going to examine that kind of problem and those some things that you can do about it.

Running a pest control San Diego service has allowed me to see that most people have to deal with pests in their home. Basically, how people try to deal with it are definitely different things. Some homeowners like to take care and try of it definitely all by themselves. While other homeowners would definitely prefer to pay a professional who could do it for them.

When you have problems with ants for example, some homeowners will think that the problem will be easily solved by applying some ant spray. But it only kills the ants which you can see as most people have already realized. What happens is the next day there will be more ants in your home. To fight that, the only way is to kill them at their very source which is definitely their ant hill. That is our main strategy in my ant control San Diego service.

Another common pest are rodents like rats and mice. This is another pest which people surely hate to see in their very own home. As an example, something most people would rather not think about is the thought of mice going into your food.

But it is a fact and the only way to fight them is to set traps and poison them. There is not some kind of a sure fire way to totally eliminate them forever. But by setting traps and poison you can limit their population from multiplying. That is what we do in our San Diego mouse control service.

So as you can see pest control problems are normal. Getting rid of them is another matter. You should be able to totally eliminate them only if you do these things. - 30446

Does Your Prospective Home Have Building Defects? 90% Do.

By Darren K. Thompson

Let's say you're in the market for a new home. Congratulations. However, be careful. There are things that can show up in your perfect new home that aren't going to be obvious to anyone, at least not at first. However, you have to rule any serious defects out before you buy, whether your home is gently lived in, new, or a fixer-upper. It's not just about poorly placed window glass or bad spackling, either.

The First Case:

In our first case, a man trusts a family friend, and buys a home he and his family have fallen in love with. After six years, which is well past any warranties the home might have, the home has had no problems. However, once the city builds a bypass, the next heavy rain reveals the home's flaws. It has poor drainage, which causes the lower level to flood because it has been poorly sealed. Unfortunately, the flood is of sticky mud, more than a metre deep. In the washout, a drainage culvert to the side of the house also collapses, and parts of the lawn begin to "slide" as well, becoming treacherous. At the bottom of the lawn, which slopes, the grass becomes a marsh, which ruins the once plentiful vegetable garden.

In fact, the home has bad drainage and a poorly sealed lower level. These two defects are catastrophic, to the point where this house, originally priced at $250,000, dropped by about a third in value after the cleanup. Some of the problems have since been addressed, but there has been subsequent flooding over the last decade. The former functioning lower level is simply now average storage, which has cut the home's living space in half. Many family heirlooms and memories were also destroyed in the floods, and these are irreplaceable treasures that are simply gone.

The Second Case:

Someone has bought a home, a so-called "handyman's special." Because he's pretty handy, he knows a bit about home structure, and he has also worked in construction. He likes building and renovation. He sees a roof that has some leaking, a house that needs a new paint job, and some broken bricks around the bottom of the home. Of course, these things are relatively minor and easily fixed by someone so handy. After he signs his contract, though, he finds the real problem. The house's foundation is cracked, caused by poor settling. The south end of the home is settling faster than the north end is. Jacks have helped hide this problem and level the floors, but he can't repair this himself. To repair this problem will cost him more than he originally paid for the home.

Problems like these, and others, may hide in the home you're considering. This can be true whether it's new or old. Even if you think you know about homes and your best friend is the builder, it's a possibility that the home you're considering has serious building flaws.

In fact, 90% of homes have flaws that are serious enough to cost you as many as tens of thousands of dollars in renovations or repair. A small minority of these homes has flaws that are serious enough to make the only really fiscally feasible solution a razing of the home altogether, and then rebuilding.

Before you consider buying any home, hire a building inspector. These people have worked for decades in construction and have seen everything. They know where to look for land quality, zoning issues, the home's history, and any credentials needed. They know whom you should trust and whom you should avoid, and they also know what corners dishonest contractors cut. These corners might surprise you, and cost you a lot.

Before you buy, get an independent building inspection. It could be the best money you spend in the complex transaction to get your new home. - 30446

Subterranean Termite Control

By Russ Frank

Different types of termites require different termite control methods. Subterranean termites live in the soil because they require moisture. Drywood termites do not require as much moisture, so they can live in dry wood. Fumigation is an effective control for drywood termites but not for subterranean termites. Subterranean termite control requires either bait systems or soil treatments.

Subterranean termites are widespread across the U.S., mostly in the southern states. Because of their wide distribution, experts say subterranean termites cause most of the termite damage to homes and other structures every year. Around $4.5 billion is spent annually for termite control and to repair the damage caused.

The ideal situation for subterranean termites is to find wood that is in close contact with the soil. If they find wood nearby but not touching the soil, they will build "mud tubes," to connect the colony to their food, the wood. Mud tubes are essentially highways that allow termites access to their food supply without being exposed to predators or weather.

The nature of termites is to remain hidden. They avoid exposure to the outside environment. In addition to the use of mud tubes, they also prefer to remain hidden on the inside of wood. This makes termite control all the more difficult. Infested wood may appear perfectly normal on the outside while the inside is largely eaten away.

So how can subterranean termites be detected? Mud tubes are an obvious sign. Accumulations of wings are another bad sign, especially if they are recent. If a patch of wood looks suspicious, tap on it with the handle of a screwdriver. Any hollow sounds should be considered another warning sign. Contact a termite control professional to verify your findings.

There are only 2 effective methods of termite control for subterranean termites. The first is soil treatments and the second is bait systems. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Soil treatments can be intrusive for most homeowners, plus they use relatively large amounts of chemicals. Advantages of soil treatments are that the termites can be eliminated fairly quickly. In addition, protection can continue for several years.

Baiting systems work by offering termites small amounts of wood as bait. When termites locate the bait, the wood is replaced by bait that contains a slow-acting poison. When it is taken back to the colony and shared, the colony dies. The advantages of this termite control system are that it is not disruptive, and that it uses very small amounts of poison. The disadvantages are that it may take several months to eliminate the colony, and that the cost of monitoring make it a bit more expensive than the soil treatment.

The behaviors and needs of subterranean termites are the key to both understanding and control. The first step is to locate potential problems around the home and make the changes needed to reduce the risk. The second step is to schedule annual termite inspections by a termite control professional. Immediate detection will minimize any damage and keep your home safe for years to come. - 30446

Here's How to Beat Cockroaches at Their Own Game

By Darren K. Thompson

No one likes cockroaches. They're large, quick-moving, insidious pests that can quickly take over your house. They eat human food and pet food, and carry microbes on their bodies that can be potentially dangerous to people, including tropomyosin, which has been linked with asthma. Finding one may be a sign that you have an infestation somewhere in your house.

Cockroaches are so difficult to kill that they can go with no air for over thirty minutes and survive with no food for over a month. They are very elusive and difficult to find. Roaches can fit through holes as small as half a millimetre. They have been known to survive nuclear explosions with no damage! The question is, how would you even know if you had these pesky creatures in your home?

Light is the best way to find out if you really do have cockroaches. Since these pests are nocturnal, roaches like to roam around in search of food late at night in the dark. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to sneak up on them since they have a nerve that runs from tail to head that lets them know that something or someone is about to attack.

First, enter a dark room very quietly, taking your time and moving slowly. Then, simply flip on the lights and watch as the cockroaches run for the dark places. They may hide behind your sinks, under cupboards and cabinets, or even inside of them, behind loose baseboards, beneath furniture, behind a mirror or picture hung on the wall, and of course, beneath beds, in closets, and in garages.

It is vital to not leave food lying around and if you spill something, especially something sticky, clean it up really well. Keep your dishes clean and sweep and mop very often, specifically in corners. Store your food in air tight containers, some stores even offer pest resistant storage containers. Keep in mind that once you have roaches, it is hard to get rid of them, so prevention is the best way to keep roaches out. Woodpiles and cardboard are roach vacation spots, so keep these items far away from your home.

Cockroaches can fit through the most unexpected spaces to find food. Check your home often and seal all cracks that you find in the walls, floors, ceilings and foundation. Caulk regularly around tubs, sinks, windows and any other outlets you find that lead to the outdoors.

But how do you take care of them if you are infested? There are a variety of bait traps out there, though the ones using boric acid, or containing hydramethylnon gel are the most effective. Any bait with an egg killer agent can help you reduce the cockroach population in your house. However, while these are useful against the occasional roach, what do you do against a full infestation?

To truly remove a cockroach infestation from your house, you should hire a professional extermination service. They have more tools at their disposal to take care of the problem, the ability to answer your questions, and a guarantee that you won't find in a small boxed trap. Exterminators can also tell you if you have more than just roaches.

It only takes a little extra effort to prevent roach infestation and can save you a ton of money and time in the long run. Instead of fighting a losing battle against these intelligent and almost indestructible bugs, call an exterminator to get rid of the problem permanently. - 30446

Tips To Prevent 2 Pests From Invading The Home

By David Darby

One thing we always seem to do is normally react to different problems. Sometimes reacting to problems is basically not the best route to take. For instance with the kind of problem of pest control for your home you do not want to wait long. You definitely need to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.Because once they successfully invade your home it is sometimes difficult to get rid of them.

First of all running a San Diego pest control service has allowed me to see what are the most common problems. These are the common problems that caused these pests to come into the home.Sometimes I see they are truly unavoidable, while other times there are definitely some things you can do.

One good example with regards to ants is that they really attack hard in the summer months. They do this mainly because they hibernate in the winter so they absolutely need to store more food during the summer. Running a ant control San Diego service has allowed me to see what things they could have done.

These things they should have done are clean up after each meal. One thing you don't want is to have something for them to find.Because if they do not find anything to eat they definitely won't come in.In general always keep your home clean of food and spills and it should absolutely help.

With regards to rodents these are one pest that are definitely a little harder to keep out. The main reason for this is simply because they can actually squeeze into such small holes. That means any openings in your house they can find there way in.Poisoning them is really the best way to prevent a full infestation. That is one of the main strategies in our San Diego mouse control company. Set up poison on the outside the home before they come in.

So as you can see there are a couple of helpful things you can do to prevent these pests from bothering you.If you actually do them you should not have as much trouble as it should seem. - 30446

Are You Familiar With The Various Termites Types?

By Don Rodriguiez

What are the main termites types? Do you know your termites? You need to know some basic facts about these insects if you are to protect your home and yard against unwanted invaders. This article will discuss the three most prominent types of termites found in the United States.

Living in highly organized colonies with distinct social groups which have particular duties and functions, are dry wood, subterranean, and Formosan termites. These are the three species of termites found in the United States which despite their diversity share a common enemy -- ants. All three groups of insects get their food from cellulose which is found in wood and wood products.

As their name implies, subterranean termites live beneath the ground. It is estimated that they cause 95% of the over three billion dollars in damage caused by termites each year to residential and business properties. Through a system of complex tunnels which they construct, these insects make their way to the surface for feeding.

Formosan termites are especially threatening to residences and forests. This is because, unlike dry wood termites which inhabit dead and dying trees and wood, these subterranean insects attack healthy trees. Experts say it may take up to two years from the time the colony establishes residency to discover this damage. That is why they are more dangerous than dry wood termites which live above the ground in dead trees and in houses and furniture made of wood and wood products. Formosan are considered late comers to the United States because they arrived after World War II on military vessels returning from duty in Asia, particularly East Asia.

All three groups of termites in the USA swarm in the early spring. However, not all members of the colony do so as is commonly misunderstood. Only the group known as alates get to enjoy this activity -- the purpose of which is to find mates with whom they go off and establish new colonies. - 30446

Here Are Some Simple Ways To Learn Termites Types

By Don Rodriguiez

You need to know some basic facts about termites which will help you to identify them. This article will hopefully arm you with sufficient information which will enable you to identify termites in your area. Are you familiar with the three main termites types found in the United States?

There are three basic types of termites: subterranean, dry wood, and Formosan. All three derive their food supply from cellulose which is found in wood and wood products. All three kinds also live in highly organized and socialized colonies. They also all share a common enemy " ants.

Subterranean termites tend to live in the soil beneath your house and then come up through a complex system of tunneling to the ground for feeding. Experts estimate that these pests account for some 95% of the damage done by termites each year which range in the neighborhood of three billion dollars a year.

Of the three groups of termites, Formosan are considered late comers to the USA, arriving on military cargo and supply ships returning from Asia at the conclusion of World War II. These subterranean pests threaten homes and forests alike. One characteristic which distinguishes them from dry wood pests which live above the ground in dead trees and wood in houses and furniture, and which makes Formosan particularly threatening is the fact that they not only attack dead and dying trees, they invade healthy trees. Experts say that it may take up to two years to notice damage done by a colony after it has infested an area or tree.

Bedbugs: Methods of Treatment

By Renee Garcia

There are so many ways of treating bedbugs. The most convenient for you will be by contacting an exterminator to deal with the infestation.

You can do bedbug treatment on your own. Just choose from the following methods: extreme heat, steam cleaning, diatomaceous soil, mattress cover, and insecticides.

One effective method in bedbug treatment is steam cleaning. The only disadvantage with this method is that it cannot be applied to all materials. Certain furnitures are finished with a material that cannot withstand steam cleaning. You have to check first before using this.

Exposing the infested mattress, linens, or furniture under the sun for hours can do the trick. But first, scrub and vacuum each surface.

It is important for you to know that after vacuuming the infested materials, you must dispose of the used vacuum bag properly. This is done by sealing the vacuum bag inside a plastic bag. And before putting back the exposed materials into the house, you must check for the presence of bedbugs again.

Bedbug insecticides come in sprays or in dust forms. Choose which one is suited for you. It is important for you to carefully read and understand the product label and the instructions. Observe utmost care in applying the insecticide.

Diatomaceous soil is also used for bedbug treatment. This soil is composed of single-celled algae. The soil particles have jagged edges which cut through a bedbug's body. You simply have to scatter the soil around the infested area and leave it there for a couple of days. You need not worry about the soil harming you or a pet because the particles are too small. After leaving the soil for a few days, you can remove it by vacuuming. Do not forget to seal the used vacuum bag in a plastic bag.

If the bedbugs can only be found in the mattress, you can treat it by using a fabric or vinyl mattress cover. You can put the mattress inside and seal all the zippers around it. Once the mattress is sealed inside the cover, bedbugs will be confined inside the mattress. The bedbugs cannot even eat and in 6 months or more, the insects will die of hunger. - 30446

Termites Treatment: Are You Aware of Alternatives?

By Don Rodriguiez

Fumigation and insecticides, used widely in the United States and many other countries around the world, continue to be criticized in the USA on the basis that they pose risks to the health and safety of people and pets as well as present threats to the environment. This article explores some alternatives to termites treatment involving these much maligned methods of exterminating termites.

One such alternative which is said to interrupt the life cycle of termites is boric acid. Although some experts doubt its effectiveness in getting rid of large colonies, this system works by being dissolved in water and then spread over infected areas. Boric acid controls the population of the colony by preventing it from growing and most importantly, from moving on to other locations. This form of treatment is generally considered a preventive measure which contributes to the doubt expressed by some experts in using the product to get rid of an infestation.

Microwaves is another rather recent method of getting rid of pesky insects. Best used for small infestations confined to a particular area, this method shoots rays into the wall or wood killing the insects in two to three days.

Freezing is also sometimes used. Like microwaves, this process is effective in the early stages of infestations and where the problem is confined to small areas. Liquid nitrogen is pumped or sprayed into the affected areas, often through the tunnels constructed by the termites. Walls and insects are frozen, the former forever and the latter only for a brief time.

For larger colonies which are confined to a small area, electricity can be used. Electro-guns shoot high voltage electricity into the habitat of the colony. And finally, for large colonies in a large space, heat treatment should be considered, and in fact, in some states it is the only lawful alternative to fumigation where a large portion of the house is infected. - 30446

Termite Prevention Tips

By Russ Frank

Termites can infest any home at any time. The best way to achieve termite control is to understand and practice termite prevention. Protecting a home begins with knowing the signs and the conditions that termites prefer so that you can reduce the chances that they find your home a tasty treat. You may already have termite damage and not even realize it.

Subterranean termites nest in the ground. They prefer wood that touches the ground directly. Any wood that touches the ground is a primary candidate for termite damage. Siding and lattice work are common areas where an infestation begins. Ideal termite prevention requires that a homeowner scout out such problem areas and remove wood from contact with the ground.

Unlike drywood termites, subterranean termites need direct access to moisture. They seek out damp wood. Look for problems with gutters and downspouts or rainwater runoff. Areas where water collects close to the structure are a serious concern. Good termite prevention requires that all moisture or runoff be diverted away from the structure.

If your home has a crawlspace or attic, it should be checked for moisture or buildup of water. While not every house has a crawlspace, they attract moisture because of the nature of their construction. Construction often routes ventilation systems, such as from a laundry room or bathroom into these spaces, trapping moisture. Correction of these problems can go a long way towards termite prevention.

Mulch can also be a problem when it comes to termite prevention. To prevent termites from entering a home through these mulched areas, it's important to make sure that the mulch doesn't touch wood siding or other wood structures around the home.

Firewood can be another potential problem when it comes to termite prevention. Far too many homeowners collect and store firewood next to the house, even resting against wood siding. Move the firewood to a space in the yard away from the home.

Another overlooked aspect of termite prevention is to have an annual inspection. A termite professional knows the difference between termite damage and rotting wood. They can spot potential problems as well as risky areas. The cost of an inspection is inexpensive compared to the cost of potential damage.

Termite prevention starts by understanding that any home or wooden structure is at risk. By understanding these risks, and knowing what attracts termites, any homeowner can greatly reduce their risks. Termite control begins with knowledge, understanding and a healthy dose of termite prevention. - 30446

Fighting Bedbugs: How to Win

By Renee Garcia

If there are bedbugs at your house, you must begin fighting bedbugs to control the spread and severity of the infestation. You see, bedbugs travel fast because these can be carried from one area to another through furniture, pets, shoes, clothes, linens, and many others. Even multi-unit dwellings like apartments, condominiums, and hotels are not spared from bedbug infestations.

There are so many ways by which you can fight bedbugs. The simplest method is through sun exposure. Bedbugs die under extreme heat. Therefore, you can expose the infested furniture under the sun for hours to kill bedbugs. Another method is by steam cleaning. The only disadvantage of steam cleaning is that not all furniture can withstand this treatment.

Using diatomaceous soil is another way in fighting bedbugs. The particles of diatomaceous soil have jagged edges which can kill bedbugs.

Another method in fighting bedbugs is with the use of insecticides. You will find many varieties of bedbug insecticides. Examples of these are residual insecticides, insecticidal dusts, contact insecticides, and insect growth regulators. Bedbug insecticides can be in sprays, powder, or liquid forms.

Insecticides must be applied on the entire infested area. Pay special attention to holes, crevices, and cracks as these the preferred hiding places of these insects. In handling insecticides, you must always observe utmost care. Insecticides are poisonous if ingested.

Some bedbug insecticides were formulated to be less toxic and environment-friendly. Before applying the insecticides, always read the product label and instructions first. You must also check if a certain number of treatments are needed to achieve optimal results.

After every treatment, you must vacuum the infested area and furniture. And after vacuuming, you must dispose of the used vacuum bag properly by sealing it inside a plastic bag. This will ensure that bedbugs will not be transmitted.

In fighting bedbugs, it is also important to control re-infestation. First, make sure that you strictly follow the treatment regimen. Then, wrap your treated mattress in a plastic, fabric, or vinyl mattress cover. This has zippers along the sides which seals in the mattress inside. This way if any bedbug was spared from the treatment, it cannot eat and will eventually die. Reduce clutter and observe cleanliness. - 30446

How To Kill Bed Bugs

By Danielle Smith

Bed bugs used to be big problems back in the old days and hence the popular phrase, ?do not like the bed bugs bite?, was coined. However, in the 50s, bed bugs were just about wiped out with the use of DDT. When DDT was banned, bed bugs made a resurgence.

International travel has also inflated the problem. Now that more countries that have bed bug problems are traveling to the ones that do not, bed bugs are spreading like wildfire. Even what seems like clean and luxurious hotels are experiencing issues with bed bugs.

Bed bugs can hide anywhere. They can hide in your clothes, luggage, mattress, furniture, or in cracks and crevices in your home. Usually they will hide close to their food, which is you, so they stay in the mattress.

Bed bugs come out at night and drink your blood. They leave chemicals in the bite wound so that you will not feel pain. Once the bed bug leaves and the chemicals wear off, your skin will feel irritable.

If you want to kill all the bed bugs, then you will need to seek out all the places that they hide. They normally like to hide somewhere close to their food source. If you miss just one bed bug, they will quickly reproduce so it is imperative to get all of them.

Bed bugs usually hide in the mattress. So in order to kill bed bugs, you can get a plastic mattress cover and encase your entire mattress inside. This keeps the bed bugs from coming out at night. When night falls and you are sleeping, bed bugs come out and feed on you. You will not feel the bite when they are feeding because they excrete an enzyme into your body similar to that of a mosquito.

If you want to kill bed bugs, then you would need to be able to find all the places where the bed bugs are hiding. If you left one bed bug alive, they could still mass produce.

If you suspect that bed bugs are hiding in your mattress, then may want to buy a mattress cover. These plastic covers kill bed bugs by closing them inside the cover. After 6 months or longer, the bed bugs will be starved to death.

To get rid of bed bugs hiding in places other than your mattress, you will have to do some searching. Look at every possible crevice in your home around your bed.

If you feel that you cannot find all the places where bed bugs hide, you might want to call up a professional exterminator. They have the resources and knowledge to kill bed bugs. - 30446

Termites Orange: Is It Better Than Fumigating?

By Don Rodriguiez

When I first moved to Southern California some 10 years ago, one of the first things which caught my attention in a weird sort of way (Before I went on Hollywood Blvd.) was when I came across a house being fumigated. It was a strange and almost shocking sight. It looked eerie and almost monstrous. I remember asking the taxi driver to stop and let me look at what he later explained to me was a house being fumigated and that this was standard treatment for termites in California.

Is orange oil better than creating the monstrosity which met me over 10 years ago? Now that I know what fumigation really entails as well as some of the enduring criticisms of this mode of exterminating termites by environmentalists and others, I have an interest in termites orange.

Simply stated, orange oil is a chemical compound made from orange peels which is deadly to termites that come into contact with it and it can also block other termites from eating which results in the pests starving to death. However, termites orange is not without its own controversy and detractors. The product can be traced backed to the'30s when people used arsenic as a pesticide, criticism and doubt from environmentalists still hound the use of this method of exterminating.

It is pumped into wood for exterminating dry wood insects oftentimes through the tunnels made by the termites. But some argue that this method of treatment is not as effective as fumigating because it only kills those insects which come into contact with the oil whereas fumigating spreads out and reaches termites even in remote areas of a house.

However, orange oil is said to be more environmentally friendly than fumigation. Nevertheless, this form of treatment continues to struggle against being accepted over its rival. For instant, returning to California, there the law seems to approve orange oil and other forms of extermination for spot treatments but not for whole house treatment. If the entire house or other structure needs to be treated, then California requires that either fumigation or heat treatment be used. - 30446

How to Find Bedbugs in a Hotel

By Renee Garcia

Bedbugs were brought to the United States by the early colonists from Europe. These were eradicated by using very strong insecticides like DDT. But DDT was banned years after. This caused the resurgence of bedbugs. And increasing international travel has also caused increased incidence of bedbug infestations.

Bedbugs can be easily transmitted from one location to another. These insects can get into clothes, luggage, furniture, pets, shoes, and others. In fact, hotels are very much at risk into getting infested with bedbugs. This is because of high occupancy rates. In hotels, many people come and go. And these hotel guests can be carriers of bedbugs.

If you are staying in a hotel, how can you check if it has bedbugs?

Crevices and cracks on the walls and floors are usual habitats of bedbugs. If you see any crack or crevice inside your hotel room, you definitely have to check for bedbugs. You can also check the mattress. Look for cracks, red spots, and brown spots. The red spots are caused by blood from crushed bedbugs. The brown spots are caused by the bedbug's feces.

Once you have established that there is a bedbug infestation in your hotel room, you must inform the hotel manager at once. Do not accept an offer to be transferred to another room. Instead, stay in a different hotel. You cannot risk staying in the same hotel because bedbugs can be transmitted quite easily. In the United States, many reports of bedbug infestations in multi-unit hotels have been reported.

When you are in a hotel, it is best to make use of the suitcase stand instead of leaving your bags on the floor or furniture.

If you happened to sleep in a bedbug-infested hotel, chances are you got bitten while sleeping. In the morning, you will find bedbug bites. These bites are itchy, pink to red welts that can be raised or flat. Bedbug bites also form a characteristic linear pattern.

In this case, you must vacuum your bags (seams included) and every item of clothing. Wash these under very hot water to kill the bedbugs and eggs. Treat the bites with topical corticosteroids. - 30446

Do You Know What Termite Signs To Look For In Determining If Your House Has Been Infested?

By Don Rodriguiez

While calling an expert is the best thing you can do to determine if your property has been invaded by termites, there are some preliminary steps you can take to inspect your house to determine whether or not it is infested. This article will discuss some of the more readily identifiable termite signs which signal an infestation. You not longer have to guess, now you can know.

One of the worst things about termite infestations is most of the time people do not discover the problem until the damage has been done and repair bills are in the thousands of dollars in addition to the cost of getting rid of the pesky pests. That is why you need to know what the signs are you should look for to determine if your property has been invaded. This is no joking matter since these insects cause billions of dollars in damages every year to businesses and homes.

All three types of termites known to be in the United States have what are called alates. These are the insects that swarm in early spring. It is this swarming which presents a clear sign of infestation, although it is not always apparent, without further investigation, whether the pests are coming or going. You should look for piles of transparent wings around the foundation of your house, near trees or lawn furniture with wood in it, and parts of the outside of your house made of wood.

You want to inspect these wings very closely as you want to avoid the mistake of thinking you have termites when in fact you have ants. You need to be very careful in this regard. Check with your local pest control board or agricultural extension office if you are not sure to which pest the wings belong.

Another sign is if you see dark or blistered coloring on your wood floor which can be scrapped away with a knife. Similarly, if you knock on the wood of say a wall or door frame and you hear a tapping sound, that might very well be termites beating their heads against the wall to alert other members of the colony that danger is present. - 30446

Cockroaches Are Survivors! Don't Take Them On Alone!

By Darren K. Thompson

It may be hard to believe such a tiny creature could actually survive a nuclear explosion, but it could be the truth. Obviously you can't just take our word for it, but if you understand the differences between humans and cockroaches, we'll be able to paint you a better picture. Well, Sydney Termite Control explained it to us the best.

Human tissue starts to fall apart at a mere 100 rems. So even if you happened to be outside of the blast radius of a nuclear explosion, you'd be a goner from the radiation exposure. A cockroach, on the other hand is fundamentally different and can live even when exposed to 67,500 - 100,000 rems, or about the amount of radiation generated by a thermonuclear weapon being detonated.

The point is it's not easy getting rid of these little pests unless you find a reputable company. They should know everything about a cockroach that will give you the upper hand in eliminating the problem once and for all. This is why you should listen to the Sydney Termite Control company. Not only will they be able to provide information like this, but also help you get rid of your cockroaches for good.

Unlike other companies, they ask for the details of your pest problem; STC knows that each household's pest problems are unique and present their own challenges. Most pest control companies only go after the adult cockroaches; so you'll be overrun with the next generation in a month or two! Instead of providing this incomplete solution, Sydney Pest Control finds and eliminates not just the adults, but the eggs to provide a long term solution to cockroach problems.

You shouldn't try to tackle a cockroach problem on your own - it's almost as ineffective as cutting off a cockroaches head! Even without their heads, a cockroach can live for weeks; that's how tough these insects are. If you're fighting cockroaches, you have to know your enemy and Sydney Termite Control knows cockroaches just as well as they know termites and other pests.

Granted you're probably not going to have a thermonuclear explosion in your area anytime soon (which would make the cockroaches happy), but you'll probably have children, friends, and family over and you don't want them to be exposed to the cockroaches. The truth of the matter is you don't want to sit on this problem. You need to take action and let Sydney Termite Control help you.

Did you know a cockroach can live without any food for months, just by taking advantage of the glue on the back of your postage stamps?

They might be one of the world's toughest creatures, but you can take them on and win - when you have the help of professionals who know everything there is to know about roaches and how to get rid of them. - 30446

Termites House: It's Not The House That Jack Built

By Don Rodriguiez

Although thee are three types of termites in the United States, this article will discuss termites house of only two of them: subterranean and dry wood. Formosan will be left for a later discussion. The reason you need to know which termites have infested your home is because there are different treatments for termites depending on the kind of infestation your property has.

Subterranean termites live beneath the ground. They dig tunnels into the soil where they build their colony and then gnaw out tunnels to reach the ground for food which comes from wood. These are the type of pests you are faced when when the exterminator talks about drilling holes in your foundation or walls and pumping a pesticide through the hole and down through the tunnels to reach (hopefully) the colony.

No doubt, particularly if you live in California, you have seen the giant tents covering houses and businesses and signs posted around the structure warning you to stay away as "fumigation" is in progress. This is a sign of a dry wood termites infestation. These insects make their home in dead and dying wood and even furniture made of wood or wood products. Since they actually live in the wood, the worker termites have to push the waste of the colony out of their living quarters.

Subterranean and dry wood termites have a sophisticated social order which is divided into a number of classes such as worker, alates, queen, and so on. They also have army or warrior pests who defend the colony against invading ants which is their fiercest rival.

Alates is the class of termites shared by all three categories. These are the pesky pests who sprout wings in early spring and swarm. This is the ritual participated in only by alates who look for a mate and then go off to start a new colony. This strict social order of termites house is not the house that Jack built. - 30446

Bedbug Spray Treatment

By Renee Garcia

Do you have bedbugs at home? If you do, you must first identify the site of infestation. How can you do this?

In identifying the infestation site, you must take note of the time and place that you get bitten by the bedbugs. Does this happen when you slept on your bed? Or did it happen when you slept in the guest room? You can now identify the specific area in your house that is infested. Next step is to look for the insects. Check the specific furniture that you slept on. If it is the mattress, look for cracks and holes. After that, you must check anything that is close to the mattress. Look for cracks and holes where bedbugs usually live.

Adult bedbugs are 4 to 5 mm in length and are reddish-brown. Their bodies are flat, oval, and have a banded appearance. These insects are wingless.

The nymphs are lighter in color and translucent. Once you have seen these, its about time to call a professional exterminator or purchase a bedbug spray.

There are pesticides designed to kill bedbugs. These pesticides can be bought in dust form or in sprays. There are also pesticides that are eco-friendly and less toxic.

In purchasing a bedbug spray, you must be sure that the product you are buying can be sprayed on the infested furniture. For instance, certain bedbug sprays can only be used on mattresses and there are some sprays that can be used on wood. You can also purchase a bedbug spray that ca used on just about any material.

Before spraying, you must scrub and vacuum all the infested furniture. In disposing of the vacuum bag, put this inside a plastic bag to contain the bedbugs there.

After scrubbing and vacuuming, you can apply the bedbug spray on infested furniture. Just remember to read and follow the instructions carefully. You must also check if re-treatment is needed. There are many different bedbug sprays that can be bought in the market today. Examples of there are Tempo, Malathion, Pyrethrins, and Allethrin. - 30446

How to Do Bedbug Extermination

By Renee Garcia

Whenever a homeowner finds out his house has bedbugs, calling a professional exterminator is the usual answer for getting rid of them. But if you want to do it on your own, you can also do so. It is only important to remember that in bedbug extermination, patience is very much needed.

There are many ways with which you can do bedbug extermination. First, you can simply expose your mattress or sofa under the extreme heat of the sun. Dont forget to scrub and vacuum it before getting it out in the sun. And after vacuuming, put the vacuum bag in a plastic container to stop any bedbug transfer.

Another effective method is steam cleaning. The only disadvantage with this method is that not all materials can withstand it. Therefore, before using this method, you must be very sure that the furniture will not be destroyed.

Another natural method is the use of diatomaceous soil. This is composed of single-celled algae. The soil particles have jagged edges which can kill bedbugs. Leave the soil around the infested areas for a few days. To remove the soil and the dead bedbugs, vacuuming is done. Remember to discard the vacuum bag properly by sealing it inside a plastic bag. You need not worry about the soil particles harming you or any animal because these are too small.

Another effective method for bedbug extermination is the use of bedbug insecticides. When using insecticides, you must read the instructions and product label first. You must follow the instructions for application properly. And you must remember to handle the insecticides with care at all times.

If only your mattress is infested, using a mattress cover can be effective as well. You can buy one that is made of fabric or vinyl. These mattress covers come with zippers on the sides for you to seal the mattress in. This way, no bedbug can get out of the mattress.

Furthermore, the bedbugs cannot bite you anymore. It has been found that within 6 months, bedbugs die because of starvation.

All these methods are effective in bedbug extermination. You do not have to hire a professional exterminator after all. - 30446

Do You Know What To Look For In Termite Services?

By Don Rodriguiez

Selecting termite services is sometimes as difficult as the problem you are trying to eradicate. But the selection process does not have to be so troublesome. There are some things you can do as well as some things to look out for which can help ease the burden of this process.

Retaining the services of a competent and caring professional inspector is always a necessary first step because if the inspector determines that your home is infested with termites, then the inspector will recommend a suitable treatment process. Such professional should be able to share with you the specific type of pest which has invaded your property and what the available treatment programs are and then s/he should recommend one and tell you why.

You should be concerned if your inspector recommends a specific company to you to employ to do the exterminating. Instead, if the inspector should give you a list of reputable firms and leave it up to you to decide which three you will invite to come out and give you a bid or estimate of the cost of their services. Should the inspector not give you such a list, then there is no need to worry. Just check with your local agricultural extension office or state pest control board. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau.

Avoid doing business with anyone who just happens to be in your neighborhood or just by chance stops by your home. Likewise, anyone who comes to your home uninvited and claims to have found termites in nearby houses or areas should be disregarded.

Another sign is lack of a listed telephone number which means the person or company lacks experience or is too cheap to afford a phone or is working out of their vehicle. Do not do business with anyone who does not have a listed telephone number and even then you want to verify the number. Also, avoid anyone who drives a vehicle other than a pest control truck with its state license duly visible on the truck. - 30446

Trouble with Aphids in Your Greenhouse?

By Betsy Woodworth

Aphids have a tendency to settle into your greenhouse as summer closes and fall settles in. Vegetation in your greenhouse provides an appetizing alternative to the outside garden. Aphids are a common greenhouse problem, and not the easiest to combat.

The first step in dealing with aphids in your garden greenhouse is to make sure you carefully monitor plants you choose to transplant into your greenhouse. Plants selected for your greenhouse should be healthy and vigorous. In addition, you should spray them down with your garden hose to knock off any hitchhikers. If the plant has an obvious insect infestation, do not bring it into your greenhouse without more drastic measures. You can spray it with an insect control spray, or enclose it with a plastic bag in which you place an insecticide strip for two or three days. After taking your plants out of the treatment bag, hose them down before transplanting them to your greenhouse.

Minimal measures - Aphids can sometimes become established no matter how careful you are. If this happens there are several alternative paths you can take. If you do not want to use any insecticides in your greenhouse environment, you have a couple options. Hosing down infected plants with a powerful stream from your garden hose can be effective for a while. This may be the best option If you plan on closing down your greenhouse soon. Some hobby greenhouse gardeners choose to shut their greenhouse down for anywhere from 2-4 months in the winter allowing nature to take its course and freeze out insect pests. Diatomaceous earth is effective if you want a little more aggressive natural control. Sprinkle this powder on and under leaves of effected plants. This can be an effective control if you catch the problem early and have isolated insects in one part of your greenhouse,

Another way to control your aphid problem is to use a fast acting insecticide that is safe for using on vegetable gardens. There are several varieties out there that are "garden safe." Check your local garden center or hardware store for alternatives. Most of these involve an organic insecticidal soap that takes care of aphids, or at least significantly reduces their number. You can also make your own version of this by mixing a tablespoon of liquid dish detergent with water in a quart sprayer. The soap coats the aphids and reduces their numbers. You have to spray every day for best results, paying particular attention to the underside of leaves of infected plants.

Eat or be eaten - biological controls - another alternative to aphid control are biological controls, such as lacewings, ladybugs and midges. Several companies provide these predators for your greenhouses. If using this approach, be sure to limit your use of insecticidal spray, as it will kill off your predator population, as well as your pests.

There is never a foolproof control for aphids, but using a combination of the above controls should help you enjoys your greenhouse through fall and winter. - 30446

Get Rid Of Bed Bugs In Three Simple Steps Without Using Chemicals!

By Peter N King

People who have lost sleep due to bed bugs know how challenging task it is to get rid of them! It is really disappointing, annoying and very exhausting process to fight them. Also calling for help from pest control professionals can get very expensive! So people try several 'do-at-home' options to kill bed bugs.

If you are temporarily budget constrained, then don't worry. The three options we discuss today will cost you very little or nothing. Without further ado, here they are: Remove or eliminate them physically, Segregation or isolation and Water/Steam/High temperature control

Before we proceed, one note: It is not easy to get rid of bedbugs. You should combine several solutions for faster and long lasting results. The solution details are as follows:

Physical elimination: In this step we identify the bed infestations and remove them by using a vacuum cleaner, hard brush or a sticky tape. Like all other animals and insects, Bed bugs prefer to hide close to their prey. They are usually found in bed room furniture and sometimes even in living room furniture. Mattress, box spring, headboard, dresser, behind wall paper and under loose carpet, inside bed linen, behind curtains, picture frames, mirrors, under the chairs, couches etc. Examine all of them thoroughly. Examine the edges of box spring, mattress and bed frame. Turn over box spring and mattress and check underneath. Remove mattress and box spring from the bed frame examine the head board. When you find bed bugs, use a vacuum cleaner to collect them. If the infestation can not be reached with vacuum cleaner or its attachment, use a sticky tape. Press the sticky tape hard on them and then put it in a plastic bag. During your search, you may come across bed bug eggs. They are yellowish white sticky balls. They are very tiny about the size of a pin head. Scrub them off with a hard brush and put them in plastic bags. Remove the vacuum bag and seal it and quickly throw it in a dumpster. A large portion of bed bugs can be removed by this step.

Isolate the bed bugs: Let's accept it: It is difficult to get rid of bed bugs. So why not play defensively and protect what is most important for you? Store all the cloths and books in plastic bags or plastic containers. Isolate your bed so they can not reach you. Pull it away from the walls. Make sure that bed linens and cover do not touch the floor. Put double sided tape on the bed frame and the legs of the bed. Put legs of the bed, sofa and couch in a glass or small pots/pans/dish with very smooth surface. This will make it very difficult for bed bugs to climb up your bed.

Water/Steam/High temperature control: High temperature of above 120 F/50 C can be very effective in killing bed bugs. First identify all the items you can wash safely. This includes cloths, curtains, shoes etc. Use high temperature cycle to wash them. You may find some items can not be washed but can be put in dryer. Run them through hot dryer for two cycles at high temperature. You may want to dry them at a professional dryer as some of them reach to very high temperatures. You can use steam, to kill bedbugs hiding deep inside cracks and holes. Amazon has some fantastic collection of steamers. Buy a steamer and kill the bedbugs with steam. This can be very useful approach for killing bed bugs.

We wish you a speedy and long lasting elimination of bed bugs! - 30446

Why do Termites Eat Houses and how do I stop them eating mine?

By Darren K. Thompson

We absolutely love when people ask us why termites eat their homes. Keep in mind they don't do it because of the irritation it's causing you, but because it's good for them! Seriously, how can wood be nutritional to any entity? It's a debatable subject, but Sydney Termite Control has been dealing with these issues for years. The goal is to help you understand how the pest works, then what needs to be done in order to eliminate the problem.

However, this doesn't mean setting a trap on the floor and hoping they will all run to its location. Termites are a lot smarter then people give them credit for, which is why you should think about having a reputable exterminating company on your side. Oh, and if you're still wondering what they do with this entire wood, wait until you read the answer we give you.

Termites in fact are walking microorganism factories that can turn wood into a nutritious diet. We don't suggest trying it yourself, but in fact, termites can feast on wood for a long time, until it's time for them to go somewhere else. Even if you have tried pesticides, eventually, they get immune to them if they're exposed to them enough.

What that means is that the only way to get rid of termites permanently is to get rid of the nest. Unfortunately, it's hard to find the nest, and the central problem will be that you have to find and contain the termites before their population explodes. Why? Once you get to a certain timeline, the inner walls of your home could be destroyed, which could mean costly reconstruction.

If you don't want to take that risk (and I'm betting you don't), Sydney Termite Control can help you take care of that. And lest you think we're simply trying to sell you our services, think again. It's absolutely necessary that you have this done if you don't want to have long-term problems. So sit down and think about this for a minute. Would you rather pay for your home to be completely rebuilt eventually, or do you want to trust Sydney Termite Control to get rid of them for you -- when we've been in business doing just that for years?

Once everything is finished, of course you might need to reorganise your home a bit, but every situation is different. Even if your infestation is complete, it's much easier to call someone like us than it is to make a phone call to a builder to have reconstruction done; we can actually save you thousands of dollars you would otherwise have to take out of pocket.

If we can educate you on everything a termite does regarding their feeding habits, where they enjoy nesting, and the appropriate steps to eliminate them, you'll feel more comfortable using Sydney Termite Control. After all, it's in our name and we've been helping individuals just like you for a very long time. - 30446

Bedbug Bites and Their Habitats

By Renee Garcia

What are the usual insects that you see at your house? Most people complain about mosquitoes, cockroaches, or spiders. But have you had bedbugs at home? It is rather unfortunate that my house has bedbugs. How did I find out? Well, I kept waking up because of these itchy bites on my back. The bite marks were pinkish and flat. After a few sleepless nights, I decided to go see my doctor.

The doctor was able to identify that what I have are bedbug bites because of the pattern. He told me that the linear pattern, like 3 in a row, is exclusive to bedbug bites. And since I only get bitten after sleeping in my room, he told me to start checking for bedbugs there.

To treat the itching and make the bite marks disappear faster, my doctor prescribed topical corticosteroids. But he advised me to refrain from scratching because this will cause scarring.

I went home and read first how to find and identify bedbugs. I started with the mattress. Since my mattress has been with me for so long, I already saw cracks in it. These can be hiding places of my bedbugs!

Furthermore, there were areas in my mattress which had red and brown spots. I also found out that these spots are evidences of bedbugs as well. The red spots are signs of blood from crushed bedbugs. The brown spots are the feces of bedbugs.

Now, I am very sure that I will find my bedbugs here. I saw adult bedbugs and nymphs. The adults were 4 to 5 mm in length and reddish-brown. I noticed that they have flat, wingless, oval bodies. The nymphs were lighter in color and translucent. They are as small as apple seeds.

Now, I must treat my mattress to get rid of the bedbugs. I also needed to check everything that was close to the mattress like the bed frame, floors, drawers, night stand, linens, and others. I breathed a sigh of relief upon finding out that only my mattress was infested.

To kill the bedbugs in my mattress, I bought a vinyl mattress cover. This will seal my mattress and act as a barrier between the bedbugs and me. These insects will no longer be able to reach me for their food. And after 6 months, bedbugs will die of hunger. - 30446

Have You Considered A Baiting System For Termite Removal? Here Are Some Reasons Why You Should

By Don Rodriguiez

Buddhists have a healthy respect for all forms of life. This point was dramatized quite beautifully in the marvelous movie, "Seven Years In Tibet," by the character played by Brad Pitt who was commissioned by the Dalai Lama to construct a movie house. One day, he notices work has come to a sudden halt. Upon investigating, he discovers that the workers have dug into a colony of insects and as such they can go no farther.

It is not always practical to relocate insects as Brad Pitt's character does in the movie. This is particularly true when you are dealing with termites which could number in the millions and whose colony might be deep in your walls, under your foundation, or even in the ground beneath your house. However, you can and should consider the use of a baiting system for termite removal. This strategy has been proved to be environmentally friendly and is the right tool for those who are concerned with both life and the environment.

You have several choices when it comes to getting rid of termites. However, not all of them are environmentally friendly. Fumigation and insecticides are the most popular forms of termite removal but at the same time they are the most threatening to the health of people, pets, and the environment which is way environmentally conscious people try to avoid using them. Herein lies perhaps the strongest and most convincing reason for resorting to a baiting system.

Baiting systems work by setting traps in strategic locations and then allowing the worker ants to carry the poison back to the colony where it is ingested and spread around, eventually wiping out the infestation. Of course, even here you have several choices of baiting systems which allow you to maximize alleviating your concerns about the environment.

Depending on the nature of your termite infestation, baiting systems can be used alone or they can be combined with a termiticide. In any event, the system requires that the professional using it have specialized knowledge and that several trips to your home will have to be made to adjust the placement of the product to insure it is being carried to the full colony. Unfortunately, when the system has to be used with a termiticide, environmental concerns are raised and you have to decide whether the need to get rid of the pests outweigh such concerns. - 30446

How to Check for Bedbugs

By Renee Garcia

Do you know when to start inspecting for bedbugs?

Sleepless nights can be caused by a lot of things. But if you see bite marks in the morning, you have to identify the specific insect that is causing them. Mosquito bites are like bedbug bites because both are pinkish to red in color.

Bedbug bites can either be raised or flat and these usually have a pattern. For example, you will find 4 or more bites in a row. When a bedbug is disturbed during feeding, it usually moves a bit farther from its initial position, causing the pattern.

The bedbug bites also cause itching and burning. Although the bites do not cause any disease, the itching and burning can bring discomfort. For treatment, topical corticosteroids are the most effective. These relieve the burning and itching as well as make the bite marks disappear.

Antihistamines or systemic corticosteroids are also used for the burning and itching. These medicines cannot make the bite marks disappear faster.

After establishing that the bite marks came from bedbugs, it is time to check for the existence of the insects. First you must know when the bite marks usually appear. And it is important for you to know where you slept. If you slept on your bed and woke up with the bite marks, you must start checking the mattress. Look for crevices or cracks. Look for red and brown spots also. The red spots came from the blood of the crushed insects. And the brown spots came from their fecal matter.

After the mattress, check for bedbugs in other areas of the room. Check the carpet, flooring, walls, bedpost, furniture, drawers, and dressers. Yes, you have to check every nook and cranny. Look for cracks and crevices. These can be hiding places of bedbugs.

Remember, when you have identified a certain area as the site of infestation, nothing must come out of that room. You might transfer the bedbugs somewhere else. After you check for bedbugs, getting rid of them is the next step. - 30446
