Do You Know What A Termite Inspector Does?

By Don Rodriguez

A termite inspector is a professional with technical knowledge and skills to help you to preserve and protect your home. However, many consumers and homeowners have misconceptions about just who a termite inspector is and how valuable his/her work is in the war against termite infestations.

You should make every attempt to avoid an inspector who is associated with a pest control company as doing so will help to avoid conflicts of interest. You want someone who will give you an honor assessment of whether or not your home is infested and if so, the extent of the problem. You do not want someone who will give you a sales pitch even before it is certain you have a problem.

Always ask to see the license of anyone claiming to be an inspector. Take hold of the license and look at it carefully with particular attention paid to the expiration date. You should be concerned if the person is poorly dressed or wearing coveralls. Not only do termite inspectors have specialized knowledge and skills, they also have tools of the trade which are easy to recognize such as a small hammer, an ice pick or similar tool, a flashlight, a temperature gauge, a writing tablet, a screwdriver, and sometimes a stethoscope for listening for termite activity inside walls.

Remember that the purpose of an inspection is to determine whether your property is infested with termites and if so, the extent of that infestation. You want to look for signs of the presence of termites such as a cluster of wings, mud tubes, thin sheets of wood, and wood powder. That is why it is critical that you accompany the person to make sure s/he does a detailed inspection of your property. Particular attention should be given to the basement and attic and any crawl space beneath your home. Outside foundation should be checked as well as any trees you might have.

Finally, you should be concerned not only with whether or not your property has been infested, you should be concerned with whether there are conditions present which make your property more attractive to a termite invasion. The inspector should address these concerns. - 30446
