Bedbug Bites and Their Habitats

By Renee Garcia

What are the usual insects that you see at your house? Most people complain about mosquitoes, cockroaches, or spiders. But have you had bedbugs at home? It is rather unfortunate that my house has bedbugs. How did I find out? Well, I kept waking up because of these itchy bites on my back. The bite marks were pinkish and flat. After a few sleepless nights, I decided to go see my doctor.

The doctor was able to identify that what I have are bedbug bites because of the pattern. He told me that the linear pattern, like 3 in a row, is exclusive to bedbug bites. And since I only get bitten after sleeping in my room, he told me to start checking for bedbugs there.

To treat the itching and make the bite marks disappear faster, my doctor prescribed topical corticosteroids. But he advised me to refrain from scratching because this will cause scarring.

I went home and read first how to find and identify bedbugs. I started with the mattress. Since my mattress has been with me for so long, I already saw cracks in it. These can be hiding places of my bedbugs!

Furthermore, there were areas in my mattress which had red and brown spots. I also found out that these spots are evidences of bedbugs as well. The red spots are signs of blood from crushed bedbugs. The brown spots are the feces of bedbugs.

Now, I am very sure that I will find my bedbugs here. I saw adult bedbugs and nymphs. The adults were 4 to 5 mm in length and reddish-brown. I noticed that they have flat, wingless, oval bodies. The nymphs were lighter in color and translucent. They are as small as apple seeds.

Now, I must treat my mattress to get rid of the bedbugs. I also needed to check everything that was close to the mattress like the bed frame, floors, drawers, night stand, linens, and others. I breathed a sigh of relief upon finding out that only my mattress was infested.

To kill the bedbugs in my mattress, I bought a vinyl mattress cover. This will seal my mattress and act as a barrier between the bedbugs and me. These insects will no longer be able to reach me for their food. And after 6 months, bedbugs will die of hunger. - 30446
